Jingle Shell |
|
Jingle shells (Anomia simplex) are often up to 1 - 2 in. These bivalves (two-part shells) attach themselves to hard objects in the water, often other shells, by means of threads (byssus) that extend from a hole in the lower valve. The upper valve is concave, while the lower is flatter and often shapes itself to the object it has grown on. The translucent shell ranges in color from a thin yellow to black. They live below the tide line to depths up to 60 feet and can be found from the Gulf of Mexico north to Cape Cod.Both the color and the translucency was very compelling to me. There are between 5 and 10 layers of light watercolor wash piled to convey that shiny delicacy the jingle shells are so well known for. |
