Sea Nettle

Chrysaora fuscescens

This species of Sea Nettle can be found in the American east coast from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico, but it particularly seems to like the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. This Cnidaria averages 8” across its bell with tentacles reaching 4-5". For humans, just brushing against its tentacles releases a toxin that causes a painful rash. The pain and the rash can last up to 20 minutes. The Chesapeake Bay Sea Nettle has a semi-translucent white bell with red gonads hanging from the edge. Tentacles are reddish.
